New Course Proposal to EMBA Program, National Central University

By Wesley Shu, Associate Professor

Course Title:

Business Communication in English ¡V General Level

Description:

The purpose of this course is to provide learning and practicing opportunity for students on business English.  Due to its special geographical and eco-political environment, Taiwan is facing more and more intense global competition.  Taiwan may well survive, but to succeed, it requires more effort.  Although Taiwan can put forward a variety of competitive strategies, language excellence is without doubt the catalyst to the success of Taiwan¡¦s globalization.  Nevertheless, competence in English is a goal, not an achievement for corporate Taiwan yet.

This course will provide different scenarios and thus create a situational learning environment in class.  Some scenarios are job interview, chatting on an airplane, social work, insurance policy, etc.  Students will learn how to compose sentences in different business situations, write business messages, demonstrate appropriate manner in business meetings, discern the sophistication of different business cultures, convince business partners with good attitude, make persuasive presentations, etc.

I will not simply teach students how to speak English but also familiarize students with Western culture, which I believe is the essence of business communication with westerners.  I will also invite people, whose jobs are business and culture exchange, to deliver lectures.  For example, L¡¦alliance françaiseªk°ê¤å¤Æ¨ó·|, ITI Ireland ·Rº¸Äõ¤u·~µo®i¸p, etc.

The audience of this course is those who already have finished college freshman level English and have at least one-year work experience.
