Visit to Cathay Data Science and Technology Development Center to Explore AI Applications

On May 20, 2024, students from the Economics Department of National Central University visited the Cathay Digital Data and Technology Development Center (hereinafter referred to as "Data Science Center"). This visit not only allowed the students to understand how their classroom learning applies in the industry but also inspired them to consider how their skills could be utilized in future careers.

Example Sharing and On-site Visit

At the start of the visit, the data scientists from the Artificial Intelligence Technology Division of the Data Science Center (hereinafter referred to as the "AI Team") introduced the students to the applications of AI in their department, the basic principles of AI, and future development directions through a presentation. The students were then invited to tour the workplace and were introduced to the design concepts of the lobby and corridors on that floor, which provided them with a deeper understanding of Cathay and the Data Science Center.

The main work of the Data Science Center’s AI Team involves integrating new technologies needed by subsidiaries to drive digital transformation and enhance competitiveness internally, rather than focusing on external sales or operations. Thus, the speakers engaged with the students interactively, guiding them to think about the benefits of AI for the financial industry. Key AI applications discussed included identity recognition technology, voice services, and how large language models assist internal operations. Given that the financial industry is highly regulated and client-facing, risk management is crucial, necessitating rigorous technology for client identification and assessment.

Clarifying Doubts and Stimulating Discussion

During the Q&A session, students raised various questions, such as the risks of data leakage in model training and the potential for technology to be used in fraud. The Data Science Center addressed these concerns by explaining that model development does not use real customer data, so data leakage is not a concern. They also noted that risks of technology being used in fraud can be managed through adversarial techniques, with specific technologies available to detect AI-generated content.

Inspiring Reflection and Looking Forward

The visit allowed students to deeply appreciate the extensive applications and importance of AI technology in the financial industry. The AI Team not only showcased cutting-edge technology but also inspired students to reflect on their future careers. Many students reported that the visit provided them with a more comprehensive understanding of AI technology and its practical applications and offered new insights for their future learning and career planning. The professionalism and innovative spirit of the Data Science Center left a lasting impression on the students, who look forward to more such learning and exchange opportunities in the future.
