Invitation to Cathay Financial Holdings: Sharing the Latest AI Technology Applications

On May 16, 2024, the Department of Information Management at National Central University invited the Artificial Intelligence Technology Division team (hereinafter referred to as the "AI Team") from Cathay Financial Holdings' Digital Data and Technology Development Center (hereinafter referred to as the "Data Science Center") to give a campus lecture. The lecture focused on the AI technologies and financial applications currently utilized by Cathay Financial Holdings. By integrating the AI Team’s research expertise with the department’s data science and machine learning curriculum, the goal is to cultivate more AI experts and engineers for the digital financial sector.

Integration of Technology and Finance

The lecture was presented by Assistant Manager Yang Zihui and data scientists Chen Yiwei and Chen Yuntao from the AI Team at the Data Science Center. They discussed the topic "Application of AI Models in the Financial Industry," providing a detailed overview of Cathay Financial Holdings' progress in AI technology research and its practical applications in the financial sector. Assistant Manager Yang highlighted the broad applications of AI in finance, including risk management, customer service, investment advice, and fraud detection. He noted that AI technology significantly enhances the efficiency and accuracy of financial services. For example, AI models used for biometric verification—such as facial recognition, voiceprint, and signature verification—not only reduce the risk of financial fraud more precisely but also greatly shorten review times and improve user experience.

Deepening Collaboration and Cultivating Talent

The lecture integrated with the Data Science and Machine Learning courses of the Department of Information Management. Professor Ke Shih-wen’s opening speech mentioned, "The university is committed to theoretical development. Through collaboration with Cathay Financial Holdings' Data Science Center, the latest research outcomes can be practically tested in the financial field, offering valuable learning opportunities for our students. This not only combines theoretical knowledge with practical applications but also lays the foundation for future collaboration."

Case Studies and Engaging Discussions

During the lecture, Data Scientists Chen Yiwei and Chen Yuntao introduced various AI-related applications currently under development at Cathay Financial Holdings, including facial and handwriting recognition, voice-to-text applications, and the highly discussed large language models. For instance, Cathay Financial Holdings utilizes deep learning techniques for analyzing handwritten data, offering diverse identity verification modes that enhance operational efficiency and improve customer experience.

Another case of high interest among students was AI model training. The Data Science Center uses various model training strategies to effectively test AI models' efficacy while adhering to the company's information security and risk management standards, thereby advancing digital finance.

After the lecture, students actively asked questions and engaged in in-depth discussions with the Data Science Center team. Students expressed that the lecture provided a deeper understanding of AI applications in the financial industry and sparked a strong interest in pursuing careers in digital finance.

Going forward, Cathay Financial Holdings' Data Science Center will continue to collaborate with the university through internships, joint research, and other forms of partnership, providing more practical platforms for students and nurturing innovative AI talent.

Professor Ke Shih-wen expressed a desire for further collaboration with Cathay Financial Holdings' Data Science Center, such as jointly offering courses and conducting research projects, to further promote the integration of academia and industry and cultivate outstanding talent for Taiwan's digital financial development.

The lecture concluded successfully with enthusiastic applause from faculty and students, marking an important step in the collaboration between Cathay Financial Holdings' Data Science Center and the Department of Information Management. Both parties will continue to work together to drive innovation and development in the digital finance field.
