Outstanding Achievement: Two Distinguished Scholars from the School of Management Receive the "Yushan Academic Award"

The 2022 Yushan Academic Award ceremony was held on November 8, 2022, at National Central University. General Manager Mao-Chin Chen of Yushan Bank presented the awards. This year, two teachers received awards: Assistant Professor Yi-Chieh Huang from the Department of Business Management, whose work was published in the top international journal "Management Science" in the field of operations management; and Assistant Professor Shu-Cing Peng from the Department of Finance, whose work was published in the "Journal of Financial Economics" in the finance field.

Established in 2010, the Yushan Academic Award is a collaborative effort between Yushan Bank and 11 leading university business schools, providing a total of up to NT$110 million over five years to promote academic excellence. The award covers fields such as finance, accounting, marketing, information management, operations management, and organizational management. With support from Yushan Bank and the Yushan Cultural and Educational Foundation, National Central University's School of Management officially announced the establishment of the Yushan Academic Award in 2021 to encourage faculty to publish their research in world-renowned journals and advance to the international academic stage.

Vice President Shang-Yao Yen of National Central University stated that this is the second year of collaboration with the Yushan Academic Award. The award has greatly incentivized the enhancement of academic research energy in the management field, and there is hope for more outstanding teachers to publish in top international journals in the future. Dean Ping-Yu Hsu of the School of Management also mentioned that it is remarkable for teachers to balance teaching, administrative duties, and research while publishing in top academic journals. The Yushan Academic Award is a significant honor and recognition for the faculty.

Assistant Professor Yi-Chieh Huang’s paper addresses the proportion of preferences that can be ignored when groups make decisions based on the majority's preferences. Past research on critical proportions was mostly derived from experiments, which made it difficult to apply these proportions to real-world situations due to the experimental setting and small sample sizes. Her research team proposed an innovative method using data from Taiwan's automobile theft insurance deductibles to estimate the critical proportion. This paper is the first to estimate the proportion using non-experimental large sample data, providing accurate and realistic values that can be more broadly applied to risk assessment in everyday decision-making scenarios.

Assistant Professor Shu-Cing Peng’s research focuses on the impact of the U.S. granting China permanent normal trade relations status at the end of 2000 on the board structure of U.S. companies. This study not only provides a possible and complete response policy for companies facing macro-environmental changes, scientifically verified through rigorous research, but also bridges academic theory with practice, enriching the literature on board functions in corporate governance.

General Manager Mao-Chin Chen of Yushan Bank emphasized that human resources are a key indicator of national development, and excellent teachers are crucial for cultivating more talented individuals. The main goal of the Yushan Academic Award is to promote domestic management research and international integration. Over the past 12 years, 53 teachers have received this award, many of whom are promising young scholars. Yushan Bank is committed to continued investment in academic and sustainability issues.
